About the choir

The Minnesota Girls’ Choir is led by Jonathan Kirkham. He started the choir in 2016 for his two young daughters, who watched their older brother go to boys’ choir rehearsal every week (and wondered out loud why there wasn’t a girls’ choir for them).

Jon was born and raised in Minnesota, and he sang in the Armstrong High School Concert Choir and Chamber Singers. At Brigham Young University, he sang in the Men’s Chorus and Concert Choir. He was also the executive director and is currently a board member for the North Star Boys’ Choir.

The purpose of the girls’ choir is modeled after the traditional boys’ choir: to create a semi-professional choral experience for young singers.  We learn proper posture, good singing techniques, and respectful behavior.  We sing a variety of music, including classical, folk, sacred, and modern songs.  The songs are moderately challenging, with up to four-part SSAA harmonies.
